Microscopes

The microscopes at the NYSBC are located in specially built rooms, each one including a concrete slab that is supported directly by the bedrock of the island of Manhattan, and which is isolated from the rest of the building. This feature allows the instruments to be impervious to vibrations of passing trucks or other disturbances commonly found in the city. In addition, the walls are sand-filled to keep the rooms quiet. An air conditioning system with duct socks produces near laminar flow and wall padding help to minimize perturbations and allow the collection of high resolution images.

Three of our instruments are equipped with Shottky type field emission guns, which produce a highly coherent and bright electron beam. All the instruments are equipped with the necessary options for cryogenic work. In addition, one of the instruments, (JEOL3200FSC) can be cooled down with liquid helium, allowing some extra protection of the specimen against radiation damage.
